CANNES 2009

International Film Festival must be born in Cannes in 1939 but the war differs from the launch. On 20 September 1946, opens the Cannes Film Festival, the first major international cultural event of the postwar period. The Festival is organized in association of 1901 managed by a Board of Directors and will be recognized as a charity in 1972. It takes place every year - except 1948 and 1950 - in September to take place before in May from 1952. After years of Grand Prix, Palme d'Or was founded in 1955. New sections are created on the sidelines of the formal organization: the International Critics 'Week (1962) and the Directors' Fortnight (1969), are in fact fully independent. The Festival looks to its debut event tourism and worldly. It is becoming more professional in 1959 with the creation of a Film Market, which begins with a few dozen participants and one projection room ... It now attracts 10,000 buyers and sellers worldwide. A landmark measure in the history of the festival: in 1972 he became the sole decision maker for the selection of films. Previously, only the films nominated by their countries of origin were eligible for selection. In 1978, at the initiative of Gilles Jacob, then Managing Director, the price of the Camera d'Or was created to reward the best first film of the three selections combined. It also creates the Un Certain Regard, non-competitive.
